What is BMI and how is it calculated?
Body Mass Index (BMI) is your weight divided by the square of your height: BMI = weight (kg) ÷ height² (m²). It is the WHO’s reference indicator for adult body composition, and the first criterion doctors check before prescribing a GLP-1 treatment such as Mounjaro (tirzepatide), Wegovy or Ozempic.
BMI and GLP-1 treatment eligibility
In the SURMOUNT clinical trials, tirzepatide was studied in adults with a BMI ≥ 30, or ≥ 27 with at least one weight-related comorbidity (hypertension, sleep apnea, prediabetes…). Most marketing authorizations follow the same framework. Our projection uses the average weight loss observed in those trials — for the full month-by-month breakdown, read our GLP-1 guides.
The limits of BMI
BMI cannot distinguish muscle from fat and says nothing about abdominal fat distribution. A muscular athlete can have an “overweight” BMI without excess fat. Complement it with waist circumference and, on treatment, with regular tracking of your body composition — exactly what MounjaGO is built for.
Frequently asked questions
What BMI do you need for Mounjaro?
Clinical trials and official indications target a BMI ≥ 30, or ≥ 27 with a comorbidity. The final decision always belongs to your doctor.
Is the weight loss projection reliable?
It reflects SURMOUNT trial averages (up to about 21% of initial body weight at 72 weeks on 15 mg). Individual results vary with dose, adherence, diet and physical activity.
