Wegovy Pill: What the Trials Show and How You Take It

Wegovy pill: in the OASIS 4 trial, oral semaglutide 25 mg taken once a day led to an average 13.6% weight loss over 64 weeks, against 2.2% on placebo, and 16.6% if every participant is assumed to have stayed on treatment (NEJM, 2025). The FDA approved it on December 22, 2025 and the European Commission on July 15, 2026. Prices, insurance coverage and local availability are a separate question, and we could not verify them.

If the idea of a weekly injection has kept you from starting, or you are on an injection and wonder whether a daily tablet would do as well, the answer lies in the trial data and in some practical rules that come with a pill. Here is what the studies show, how the Wegovy pill is taken, and what is still unknown.

What is the Wegovy pill and who is it for?

The Wegovy pill is an oral form of semaglutide, the molecule in injectable Wegovy, at a 25 mg dose taken once a day. Regulators describe it as a weight-management treatment for adults with obesity, or with overweight and at least one weight-related condition, used alongside a reduced-calorie diet and more physical activity. It is the same molecule that sits on one side of our Zepbound vs Wegovy head-to-head breakdown.

The FDA approval of December 22, 2025 covers reducing excess body weight, maintaining weight reduction long term, and reducing the risk of major adverse cardiovascular events in adults with obesity or overweight. The European authorization of July 15, 2026 covers adults with a BMI of at least 30, or at least 27 with a weight-related comorbidity. The European product information lists four tablet strengths (1.5 mg, 4 mg, 9 mg and 25 mg) and says the tablet is for adults only.

  • Molecule: semaglutide, the same as injectable Wegovy.
  • Schedule: one tablet a day instead of one injection a week.
  • Maintenance dose: 25 mg a day, reached after a stepwise increase.
  • Where it is sold: Novo Nordisk lists the US, the UK, the UAE and Bahrain as markets where it is already available, as of its July 15, 2026 release.

What does the OASIS 4 trial show about weight loss on the Wegovy pill?

OASIS 4 followed 307 adults for 64 weeks: 205 received the Wegovy pill 25 mg and 102 a placebo, all with lifestyle support. Average weight loss was 13.6% on oral semaglutide against 2.2% on placebo, a gap of 11.4 percentage points. Participants did not have diabetes, and the trial was funded by Novo Nordisk, which makes Wegovy. The results are published in the New England Journal of Medicine.

Two numbers circulate, and it matters which one you are reading. The first, −13.6%, counts everyone randomized, including people who stopped treatment along the way: 18% in the semaglutide group and 25.5% in the placebo group, according to the European product information. The second, −16.6%, estimates what would have happened if everybody had stayed on treatment. The first is closer to real life; the second describes what the drug does when it is actually taken.

Nearly six participants in ten (59.8%) lost at least 10% of their weight, against 14.1% on placebo. These are trial averages: they describe a group, not what you will get.

How do you take the Wegovy pill every day?

You take the Wegovy pill on an empty stomach, with a small amount of plain water, then wait at least 30 minutes before eating, drinking or taking any other oral medicine. The wait is not a formality: European product information states that waiting less than 30 minutes lowers absorption of semaglutide. Here is the framework in the official labels.

  • Empty stomach: the European label asks for a fast of at least 8 hours, so in practice first thing in the morning; the US label says morning, on an empty stomach.
  • Water: up to 4 ounces in the US label, up to 120 mL (about half a glass) in the European one. Swallow the tablet whole: do not split, crush or chew it.
  • The wait: at least 30 minutes before food, drinks or other oral medicines.
  • One tablet a day: never two to mimic a higher dose.
  • Missed dose: skip it and take the next tablet the following day.
  • Stepwise increase: 1.5 mg for the first 30 days, then 4 mg, 9 mg and 25 mg from day 91 onward in the US label; the European label says at least four weeks at each step.

This schedule is a general framework, not a prescription: your own pace of dose increase is set by your prescriber, based on how you tolerate each step. The US prescribing information also carries a boxed warning about thyroid C-cell tumors seen in rodents.

What are the side effects of the Wegovy pill?

Side effects of the Wegovy pill are mostly digestive and cluster during dose increases. Over 64 weeks in OASIS 4, 46.6% of people on the pill had nausea (18.6% on placebo) and 30.9% had vomiting (5.9% on placebo), most often mild to moderate and short-lived, according to the European product information.

  • Constipation: 20.1% against 9.8% on placebo, and longer-lasting than the other symptoms.
  • Dyspepsia: 18.1% against 8.8%.
  • Diarrhea: 17.6% against 8.8%.
  • Abdominal pain: 16.7% against 7.8%.
  • Permanent discontinuation because of digestive events: 3.4% of people on the pill.

Across all digestive events, 74.0% of participants on the pill reported at least one, against 42.2% on placebo (NEJM, 2025). The European label also lists, among its precautions, dehydration after vomiting or diarrhea, acute pancreatitis, cases of non-arteritic anterior ischemic optic neuropathy, and the risk tied to general anesthesia or deep sedation. Wegovy pill or injection: which one leads to more weight loss?

No trial has compared the Wegovy pill head to head with the injection or with Mounjaro, so nobody can say which one wins. You can only set separate trials side by side, remembering that they differ in length and in who took part. Injectable semaglutide 2.4 mg gave −14.9% at 68 weeks in STEP 1, against −13.6% for the pill at 64 weeks in OASIS 4, and the European label calls efficacy and safety similar between the two trials.

Treatment Trial Length Average weight loss
Wegovy pill 25 mg, daily OASIS 4 64 weeks −13.6%
Wegovy injection 2.4 mg, weekly STEP 1 68 weeks −14.9%
Injectable semaglutide (1.7 or 2.4 mg, maximum tolerated dose) SURMOUNT-5 72 weeks −13.7%
Tirzepatide, Zepbound or Mounjaro (10 or 15 mg, maximum tolerated dose) SURMOUNT-5 72 weeks −20.2%
Separate trials, to be read with caution: only SURMOUNT-5 compares two treatments with each other. Sources: OASIS 4, STEP 1, SURMOUNT-5 (NEJM).

Beyond the numbers, the difference is practical: a tablet every morning, with its fasting and waiting rules, against one injection a week. Both labels provide for switching between the 2.4 mg injection and the 25 mg tablet, and the European one adds that the effect of a switch is hard to predict because oral absorption varies more than injection: that is a prescriber decision. Is the Wegovy pill available where you live, and what does it cost?

The Wegovy pill is on sale in the United States and, according to Novo Nordisk, in the United Kingdom, the United Arab Emirates and Bahrain, while the European rollout is staggered country by country. An authorization does not put a product on pharmacy shelves: the company picks its timetable, then price and coverage are settled market by market. We could not verify a current price for the US or the UK, so we give none.

  • United States: approved by the FDA on December 22, 2025; the prescribing information was revised in January 2026.
  • European Union: authorized on July 15, 2026. Germany was the first member state to sell it, on September 1, 2026, at a pharmacy price of 170 to 280 euros according to Euronews (press report, in French, not an official source).
  • Your own country: price and coverage depend on your pharmacy, your insurer or health service, and your prescriber.

Wegovy pill: which questions should you ask your doctor?

The Wegovy pill is not a simpler version of the injection: it is a different way of taking the same molecule, with its own constraints and its own trial results. Your doctor or pharmacist is best placed to tell you whether it suits you, and a few questions help frame the conversation, especially if you already use an injection.

  • My eligibility: do I meet the BMI criteria? You can check your BMI and weight-loss projection before the visit.
  • My routine: can I take a tablet on an empty stomach every morning and wait 30 minutes before eating or drinking anything else?
  • My other medicines: some are taken by mouth in the morning; should their timing change?
  • My current treatment: would a switch help me, and how would it be organized?
  • My coverage: what would I pay in my situation?

Whatever the treatment, tracking with numbers makes a consultation more concrete. The MounjaGO app plots your weight curve and produces a PDF report to show your doctor. To be precise, its treatment catalog currently contains injectable forms only, so it does not yet handle the daily intake of a tablet.

What are the limits of these data?

The data on the Wegovy pill rest on one modest trial, funded by the manufacturer, and say nothing about what happens beyond 64 weeks. Several limits frame how to read them, and they matter as much as the percentages themselves.

  • OASIS 4 enrolled 307 adults without diabetes; side-effect rates come from 205 people on the pill.
  • No trial compares the pill with the injection or with tirzepatide: the comparison table sets separate trials side by side.
  • The US label includes a cardiovascular-risk indication, while the European label states that no cardiovascular outcomes trial has been run with the 25 mg tablet in people with established cardiovascular disease.
  • The percentages are group averages, not individual promises.
  • Prices, coverage and availability change quickly and were not verifiable for every country on October 5, 2026.

Frequently asked questions

Is the Wegovy pill as effective as the injection?

The trials give close results: −13.6% at 64 weeks for the pill in OASIS 4, −14.9% at 68 weeks for injectable semaglutide 2.4 mg in STEP 1. But these are two separate trials that were never compared head to head, so equivalence cannot be concluded.

Do you have to take the Wegovy pill on an empty stomach?

Yes, that is the official instruction: on an empty stomach, with a small amount of water (up to 4 ounces in the US label, 120 mL in the European one), then at least 30 minutes before eating, drinking or taking other oral medicines. Waiting less than 30 minutes lowers absorption of semaglutide, according to the European label.

When was the Wegovy pill approved?

The FDA approved it on December 22, 2025 and the European Commission on July 15, 2026. Approval in a given country does not mean it is already in pharmacies there.

Can you switch from Wegovy injections to the pill?

Both labels provide for switching between the 2.4 mg injection and the 25 mg tablet, and the European one notes that the effect of a switch is not easy to predict. The decision and the timing belong to your prescriber, not to an article.
